In 2014 the Chenango Land Trust (CLT) purchased Lock 99 of the historic Chenango Canal in the Town of Oxford, NY.  Prior to the cleanup shown below, the lock was totally overgrown with shrubs and trees and its remarkable structure scarcely visible. 

CLT was concerned that the structure would be damaged by continued lack of maintenance.  Fortunately, the landowner was willing to sell the property, one acre with Lock 99 and an access right of way to CLT.  With a grant from the Land Trust Alliance, CLT has cleared the overgrowth which prevents further damage from the roots.
